Dear readers,
I have recently relocated my blog to another website. I am currently having a huge customer service issue with the company I registered my new domain name to, so it can only be accessible at http://lizz.wizrocklopedia.com at this time.
This new blog will combine my "daily life" journal entries with those of my "mystical" blog, Everything Is Magic. I hope that you check it out.
Relocating
Am I Steampunk?
I wouldn't be surprised if a few people reading this blog knew what the term "steampunk" meant. Up until a few days ago, I sure didn't. However, my recent Etsy obsession has lead me to a number of handmade items on the site, all of which had been tagged with the word. I decided to investigate.
At its most basic, steampunk is a word to describe futuristic tales that take place in Victorian settings. While there is modern literature and film based on this concept, a classic example is Jules Verne. My reaction? "Cool," I thought, and went about my daily business.
A few days later, a friend described my T-shirt Corset Vest as being steampunk. It wasn't something I expected, but it's a term a lot of corset makers on Etsy use. Corsets are Victorian, and steampunk fans may as well be alerted to their presence, it seems.
I wouldn't say that I'm obsessed with the genre now, but it has inspired me quite a bit. On the one hand, my inspiration for the clothing I make and will make has been and will be combining classic and creative fashion with modern elements. New colors, new fabrics. Finding patterns that fit and don't hurt when you wear them. The same goes for my interior design ideas, though I can't say I've been able to experiment with those very much. Le sigh.
Steampunk isn't entirely like that, as far as I've discovered. Most of the steampunk projects I've found online, for the home for example, are very gear-centric. I can't see a lamp, TV set, computer, series of picture frames, my hamster cage, and fish tank, each be composed of brass with external gears and cranks. It would be too much for me. But I do find the genre very appealing. In fact, I'm even considering trying to make my laptop look like this steampunk one.
I believe that, ultimately, any sort of confinement to one genre of anything will get tiresome after awhile, at least for me. One of my philosophies is that things are in a constant state of not only change but evolution. Personal taste, fashion, health, politics, religion, society. I think my "fashion line," as it were, should reflect that philosophy as well.
Vlogs and Photos and Corsets, Oh My!
A lot's been going on since the last time I actually contributed something substantial to this thing. First and foremost, I quit my job at the local Subway. I don't like talking about work online so much, which is why I barely mentioned it before, but I'm still not going to say too much about the goings-on there. I just didn't feel appreciated or comfortable there, or even like my hard work was recognized at all. The place was also stressful because one of the people in charge has rage issues and would throw things when something went wrong. In any case, I couldn't bring myself to go in for my shift on Sunday and I wasn't the only one. I've vlogged about it in two parts, Job Quitting and Quitting Update.
Chris and I have had a few West Virginia adventures. We visited the Greenbank Radio Telescope Observatory last weekend, too. The video from that went into my first Wizrockateers video of the week [1]. I had loads of fun there. It's a beautiful facility and the telescopes' architecture makes me drool. Unfortunately, I couldn't take pictures as close as I would have preferred because my camera is digital and not film. Oh noes! I'll have to return and experiment with film. This is one of my favorite shots.
YouTube Vlog Intro
I've made three or four for other people. Now I'm finally getting around to making one for myself.
Lots of vlogging is coming, very soon.
